Relax – we’re not about to break into a chorus of Let It Go (you’re welcome for the earworm). We’re chatting today about something that doesn’t involve building a snowman.
Now that autumn is upon us, and the market has come to an end, finding fresh fruits and veg can be more difficult. You want quality, but you’re not about to move to a sunnier climate to get it. The good news is, as the air temp gets colder, so can your produce:
Why We Love Frozen Fruits and Veg
- Frozen produce is literally frozen in time – specifically, the time shortly after it was harvested. Because of the prompt freezing, the produce is at its nutrient-dense peak. Vitamin C, among other nutrients, are lost with exposure to heat, light, and time – all things that happen when produce is transported over great distances.
- It’s cost-effective – no bumps, bruises, or decay to result in product loss for manufacturers, store owners, or YOU! How many times have you thrown out that leafy green you forgot about in the back of your fridge? Things last a whole lot longer in the back of your freezer.
- Easy-to-use – just pop out of the bag and into the pot (or smoothie or bowl . . . ) No washing, no chopping, just cook (or don’t) and eat!
How To Get The Most Out Of Your Frozen Produce
- Don’t overcook – Nothing kills nutrients more than excessive exposure to heat. A few minutes on a stove-top is all it takes
- Consume EVERYTHING – because the cell wall can often become damaged in the freezing/heating process, nutrients are wont to leak out into the cooking water. By including your produce of choice in soups or smoothies, you maximize the nutrients you’re getting. Alternatively, you can save your cooking water and reuse it as a base for soups and stews.
- Mix it up! – By varying the types of produce you include in your diet, you’re getting a wider range of nutrients and enzymes, which will minimize your risk for deficiencies.
Some fruits and veg (like avocados and lemons) don’t freeze as well as others, so we do our best to keep a wide range of fresh organic produce, as well. And don’t forget your sprouts! Sprouts can grow fresh year-round, giving you a hit of chlorophyll on even the darkest winter day.
