Back to School – Top Lunchbox Picks for 2017

It’s back to school time again! Packing a lunchbox can be challenging, with allergies and picky eaters and time constraints. We’ve rounded up our favourite lunchbox staples to help make the process easier!

Back To School Protein Roundup

When I was in school, the ONLY protein I was interested in was peanut butter. Unfortunately, that’s not an option nowadays. We have a couple alternatives for kids like me:

Wowbutter

A soy-based spread that’s school lunch friendly

Tahini, Pumpkin, or Sunflower Seed Butter

Thankfully, nuts aren’t the ONLY thing that makes a good butter. Try out these seeds to see if they work for you.

If you’re staying away from even PB lookalikes, never fear! There are many protein options available for your lunches:

  • hummus – good as a sandwich spread or a dip
  • cheese
  • tuna
  • Rowe Farms ham, turkey, or bacon
  • chicken fingers – an easy add-in to a wrap, or fun with a dip

Another option, if you’re doing more of a “ploughman’s lunch”, is roasted chickpeas. Either roast your own, or pick up a pack from The Good Bean

Available in sweet or savoury flavours, these are a kid-tested hit!

The Most Requested Sides

I think I may be the only person who hears “Mom, can I get . . . ?” as much as an actual mother. Luckily for you, I listen in, and can tell you what the most requested snacks and sides are. And I’m going to do that. Right now.

Seaweed

Yup, you heard me correctly. The #1 most requested item we sell is Seasnax Seaweed. Salty, crisp, a (sea) veg that kids actually want to eat. Bonus: they’re AMAZING for thyroid health, thanks to their natural iodine content.

Squeezie Packs

I mean, TECHNICALLY they’re baby food, but kids of all ages love them as a mini smoothie. Bonus: it’s a great way to get some extra fruits & veg in.

Cheddar Bunnies

Self-explanatory. Also: the most delicious.

Just Desserts

It can be challenging to find nut free baked goods, but we have a surprisingly large array!

Sweets From The Earth

Sweets From The Earth has a nut-free line that makes back to school snacking a breeze.

New Moon Kitchen

Everything from New Moon Kitchen is guaranteed nut-free, so you can send it to school with confidence.

Enjoy Life

One-upping things again is Enjoy Life. The brand is free from all the major allergens – nuts, soy, dairy, gluten, etc. so if there are a lot of sensitivities in your life, you’re safe with these folks.

There are so many products in our store that are lunchbox friendly – I could be writing til the end of time! Hopefully this list gets you started off well, and you can come in and find the rest for yourself! Happy Back To School!
